Governor of California Commits Nearly $1 Billion to Combat Homelessness, Vows Transparency in Funding Allocation
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Oct. 29 that $827 million in state funding will be distributed to local governments and organizations in California to improve connections between homeless individuals and shelters and services. The governor emphasized that the funds will come with strong accountability measures and reporting requirements.
The distribution of the new funds will be accompanied by stringent “accountability measures and reporting requirements” to monitor expenditures and assess outcomes, Newsom confirmed.
To be eligible for the new funds, recipients had to commit to enhanced accountability, transparency, and compliance standards.
During a news conference, Newsom stressed that the state is taking unprecedented steps to address homelessness.
Grantees receiving HHAP funds must address racial disparities in homelessness, prioritize permanent housing over temporary shelters, and involve individuals with previous homeless experiences in planning.
