A beacon of hope in hurricane-ravaged Old Fort: The family-owned country store that shines bright

The Davis family, with deep roots dating back to the 18th century in Old Fort, is offering housing to residents affected by Hurricane Helene.

OLD FORT, N.C.—A month has passed since Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on western North Carolina, leaving destruction in its wake, especially in the village of Old Fort.

Due to the widespread flooding and mudslides that hit the area, the Davis family, owners of Davis Country Store and Café, have shifted their focus from providing meals and supplies to offering temporary housing for displaced locals who have no place to live.

Amy Davis emphasized the urgency of getting people out of tents and cars and into warm homes before winter sets in.

As a hub in rural America, Old Fort’s general store is a vital gathering place for the community, which has been devastated by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

While the town works on recovery efforts, the Davis family has played a crucial role in providing meals, shelter, and essentials to those in need.

The havoc caused by Hurricane Helene left many residents homeless, with extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in Old Fort and the surrounding areas.

Despite their own challenges, the Davis family immediately sprang into action, providing not just meals but also hope to the community in its darkest hour.

By partnering with local organizations and receiving donations, the family has been able to extend their relief efforts beyond food to offering temporary shelter in specially designed cabins.

As the recovery process unfolds, Old Fort and its residents face a long road ahead, with critical infrastructure repairs and rebuilding efforts underway.

The Davis Relief Fund, spearheaded by the family, continues to collect donations to support the ongoing relief and recovery efforts in the region.
