Lightning Strike Results in 14 Fatalities at Church in Isolated Refugee Camp in Uganda
In the northern Uganda refugee camp of Palabek, fourteen people lost their lives in a tragic lightning strike, according to police reports on Sunday.
The devastating incident occurred on Saturday in Lamwo district, leaving 34 others injured. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed, said police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke.
The lightning struck while residents were gathered for a prayer service in a makeshift metallic structure within the camp, which mainly shelters refugees from South Sudan.
Deadly lightning strikes are a common occurrence in Uganda during the wet seasons. Rusoke confirmed that there were no reports of fire erupting after the lightning strike.
