Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Calls on Queensland to Pause Removal of Truth-Telling Inquiry
The Queensland government should wait for the state’s Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry to finish its work and produce its report, according to Indigenous Minister Malarndirri McCarthy.
The incoming Premier had promised to abolish the commission responsible for the Inquiry, but Senator McCarthy advised him to be patient and let the process play out.
She emphasized the government’s support for the principles of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, including Voice, Treaty, and Truth.
While the Premier defended his decision to scrap the Inquiry, he also expressed a commitment to achieving positive outcomes for Indigenous communities in Queensland.
Initially supporting the establishment of the Commission, the Premier changed his stance after the majority of Queensland voters rejected The Voice referendum.
Despite the cancellation of a meeting with the Commission Chair, plans to review the decision were still in place, pending further advice.
