White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed inquiries regarding President Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s recent presidential pardon on Monday. Both the president and Jean-Pierre had previously stated on numerous occasions that such a pardon would not occur.

On Sunday, President Biden granted a “full and unconditional pardon,” absolving Hunter of all federal charges stemming from offenses committed over the last decade.

“I have never seen language like this in a pardon document that purports to pardon offenses that have not apparently even been charged, with the exception of the Nixon pardon,” remarked former U.S. pardon attorney, Margaret Love. “Even the broadest Trump pardons were explicit in what they encompassed.”

Following this, Jean-Pierre faced tough questioning from reporters aboard Air Force One. One reporter inquired if the previous denials of a pardon and the subsequent decision could be interpreted as misleading to the American public.

“One thing the president believes is to always be truthful with the American people,” she replied, while nervously highlighting that Biden “wrestled with [the decision].”

“The president took an action because of how politically infected these cases were,” Jean-Pierre continued, which led the press to challenge Biden’s stance on the politicization of the justice system.

“Does the president believe now and agree with President-elect Trump that the justice system has been weaponized for political purposes and that it needs root and branch reform?” a reporter queried.

“No. Read the president’s statement. Seriously, read the president’s statement. He stated that he has faith in the Department of Justice. He truly believes that. He mentions it in his statement. However, he also maintains that political dynamics tainted the process and led to a miscarriage of justice,” she replied.

“The system doesn’t get corrupted by politics for people whose name is not Biden?” another journalist pressed.

“You’re misinterpreting and distorting what I’m saying. I am specifically discussing a current issue,” Jean-Pierre responded. “The president acted based on his belief that there were efforts to undermine his son in an attempt to also undermine him. That’s the reality we witnessed.”

Jean-Pierre elaborated that the outgoing Democratic president is not demanding the resignation of Attorney General Merrick Garland, despite Biden’s claims that Hunter’s federal charges represented “relentless attacks and selective prosecution.”

Towards the conclusion of her briefing, Jean-Pierre hinted at the possibility of President Biden granting additional pardons, although she refrained from mentioning any specific individuals.

“There’s a process in place, obviously,” she remarked. “I’m not going to preempt the president on this, but you could anticipate more announcements, including pardons and clemency, towards the end of this term.”
