Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized After ‘Concerning Blood Test’ | US News

Harvey Weinstein has been admitted to the hospital following an “alarming blood test result,” according to his legal representatives.

The 72-year-old required “immediate medical attention” after the test results, leading to his transfer from the Rikers Island jail complex to Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

Weinstein’s attorneys stated: “Harvey Weinstein, who has been experiencing inadequate medical care and enduring horrendous and inhumane conditions at Rikers Island, is being transported to Bellevue Hospital for urgent treatment due to a troubling blood test result that necessitates immediate medical intervention.

“He is expected to remain there until his condition improves.”

They further asserted: “The lack of proper care represents not just medical malpractice but also a violation of his constitutional rights.”

The former film mogul is currently awaiting a retrial regarding his 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction, which New York’s highest court overturned in April.

The case is scheduled to be retried in 2025, with Weinstein maintaining his innocence.

Last month, his legal team filed a lawsuit against New York City, claiming he is receiving inadequate medical care under unsanitary conditions at the jail.

The legal notice accuses the facility of failing to address Weinstein’s medical needs, which include chronic myeloid leukaemia and diabetes.

It also alleges negligence, citing conditions such as “freezing” temperatures and a shortage of clean clothing.

The lawsuit seeks $5 million (£3.9 million) in damages.

Weinstein underwent emergency surgery in September to remove fluid surrounding his heart and lungs, and in July, he was hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 and contracting double pneumonia.

His spokesperson stated: “Mr. Weinstein, who suffers from multiple illnesses, including leukaemia, has been denied the medical care that anyone in his condition is entitled to, regardless of his status as a prisoner.

“This mistreatment can be seen as a form of cruel and unusual punishment.”

He was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 for another case of rape. His 16-year sentence from that case remains intact, but his attorneys filed an appeal against that verdict in June, arguing that he did not receive a fair trial.

Weinstein is also facing two additional criminal charges—a criminal sexual act and a rape charge—both of which he has pleaded not guilty to.

He has pleaded not guilty to an extra sexual assault charge filed in September.
