Sen. Hawley Cautions DOJ and FBI Against Document Destruction
The Republican from Missouri stated that the Senate intends to conduct a thorough investigation into the two agencies.
The leading Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee cautioned the directors of the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on December 4, advising them against the destruction of any records or documents that might suggest mismanagement or misconduct.
“With sunlight now on the horizon, I’m not surprised by last-ditch efforts to stonewall the incoming administration. But those efforts will fail,” Hawley remarked.
In his letter, he called on Garland and Wray to dismiss anyone responsible for document destruction and to “preserve all Department and Bureau documents in anticipation of forthcoming congressional investigations.”
Hawley also indicated in the letter his intention to leverage his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee to ensure a comprehensive investigation into what he characterized as “sordid” activities during the Biden administration.
The senator’s letter highlighted concerns regarding “bad-faith prosecutions” of pro-life activists and allegations that the FBI intended to deploy undercover agents to traditional Latin Mass Catholic church services to observe them for extremist behavior in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Wray addressed the FBI’s planned surveillance of Catholics during a House Judiciary Committee meeting in July 2023.
He explained that the memo regarding alleged Catholic extremists, which became public in February 2023, originated from a single field office in Richmond, Virginia, and did not extend beyond that.
“As soon as I learned of it, I was shocked and immediately ordered it withdrawn and purged from FBI systems,” he informed Congress.
On November 5, Hawley successfully secured reelection against Democrat Lucas Kunce with a margin of 56 percent to 42 percent and will commence his second term on January 3, 2025.
In addition to his role as ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Hawley served on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations during the 2024 Congressional session.
Hawley concluded his letter with a stark warning to Wray and Garland to “prepare for real justice to come.”
