Inspector General Reveals FBI Deployed 29 Informants in Washington on January 6
The watchdog also stated that no undercover FBI agents were present in Washington at that time.
An inspector general report released on December 12 revealed that the FBI had numerous confidential human informants in Washington during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Horowitz mentioned that the investigation found no evidence indicating that any undercover FBI employees were involved in the various protests or attended the Capitol on that day.
According to Horowitz and his team, all but three of the FBI informants were in Washington on January 6 “in connection with” the protests and related events that occurred that day.
The investigation revealed that four informants entered the Capitol while 13 others accessed the restricted Capitol grounds, despite lacking authorization to do so.
Nine informants did not access the Capitol or any restricted areas, nor did they engage in any criminal activities.
The remaining three informants were present in Washington for reasons that were not related to the events of January 6, according to the report.
Out of the 26 informants associated with the protests and other events, two were assigned to report on individuals who the FBI discovered were traveling to the capital for the occasion. A third informant was also assigned to monitor travel plans after informing their handling agent about their intended trip to Washington.
The remaining 23 informants were assigned by the FBI to go to Washington. Thirteen of this group reported their plans to their handling agents ahead of time, while the other ten did not. However, none of the 23 were found to have engaged in any illegal activities.
This is an evolving story that will be updated.
