Lucy Letby’s Legal Team Seeks Appeal, Disputing Credibility of Key Witness
The new barrister for the nurse revealed that retired paediatrician Dr. Dewi Evans has changed his opinion on the cause of death of three babies. The lawyers for nurse Lucy Letby plan to challenge her murder convictions based on the unreliability of a key medical expert at her trial and claims of contaminated physical evidence. Letby’s barrister, Mark McDonald, aims to seek permission from the Court of Appeal to reopen her case.
McDonald stated that Dr. Evans revised his opinion on the mechanism of death for three of the babies Letby was convicted of killing. He emphasized that the defense will argue that Dr. Evans is an unreliable expert and that all convictions are not safe. Letby, who is currently serving a life sentence, was found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others over a one-year period. Many expert witnesses have raised doubts about the safety of her convictions.
The defense team has received support from numerous experts who believe there has been a miscarriage of justice. McDonald highlighted that Dr. Evans had changed his mind regarding the cause of death for the babies and that reports from other medical professionals suggest no deliberate harm in certain cases.
Dr. Evans, based in Carmarthen, Wales, has declined to testify in any future trial involving Letby. Expert witnesses have also raised concerns about a blood sample used as evidence in one of the cases. The inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital will continue in January, with findings expected in 2025.
