On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of Heisman Trophy winner and former U.S. Senate hopeful Herschel Walker as the new U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.

In his announcement, Trump highlighted Walker’s dedication to youth sports and his ongoing commitment to military veterans throughout the nation.

“A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL star, Herschel has been a passionate champion for youth sports. During my First Term, he was Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition,” Trump stated.

“Herschel has visited over 400 military installations worldwide, working to eliminate the stigma around mental health. He also represented the U.S. on the bobsled team at the 1992 Winter Olympics.”

Walker, a strong supporter of Trump, campaigned for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia in 2022 but ultimately lost to Democrat Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).

At 62 years old, Walker was a collegiate football standout at the University of Georgia, where he played for three years and captured the Heisman Trophy in 1982, awarded to the top college football player for that season.

He also enjoyed a 15-year career in the NFL, playing for teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants. Additionally, he spent three seasons with the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League, a league once owned by Trump before its dissolution.

Alongside Walker’s nomination, Trump also appointed Nicole McGraw as his choice for U.S. ambassador to Croatia. He described her as a “philanthropist, businesswoman, and world-renowned art collector.”

“Nicole has shared fine art with the public through her leadership at CANVAS Art Charities and has raised millions for neglected and abused children as a Board Member of Place of Hope,” Trump added. “She holds a BFA in Art History and Studio Art from Southern Methodist University. Congratulations, Nicole!”

After announcing his choices, Trump concluded with a warning to Senate Republicans against collaborating with Democrats to expedite nominations this month.

“To all Senate Republicans: NO DEAL WITH DEMOCRATS TO FAST TRACK NOMINATIONS AT THE END OF THIS CONGRESS,” Trump cautioned. “I won the largest mandate in 129 years. I will appoint highly qualified individuals when I take office in January.”
