Mounties Face No Charges for Arresting Prominent Alberta Chief
According to Alberta’s police watchdog, there is no evidence of an offence being committed when Mounties used force to arrest First Nation chief Allan Adam outside a Fort McMurray casino in 2020.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team also concluded that there was no evidence of racist treatment by the officers towards Chief Adam.
The confrontation began when a lone officer patrolling the parking lot of the Boomtown Casino found an unregistered truck, and Chief Adam approached the officer in an agitated state, swearing and expressing frustration about being harassed by the RCMP.
ASIRT stated that Chief Adam threw down his jacket, removed his ring, and assumed a fighting stance, indicating his intention to get physical with the officer, who then called for backup.
The officer was seen tackling Chief Adam to the ground, punching him in the head, and putting him in a chokehold in dashcam footage, while photos were released showing the chief’s bruised and bloodied face.
