The Chinese Communist Party has criticized the United States for its recent announcement regarding military equipment sales and aid to Taiwan, accusing the U.S. of “playing with fire.”

This backlash from China came after the U.S. revealed it would provide $571.3 million in military assistance and approve $295 million in arms sales to Taiwan, which is an independent democracy of 23 million that China claims as its own.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has demanded the U.S. cease military support to Taiwan, labeling the aid as “provocative actions that threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
Furthermore, the U.S. authorized $2 billion in arms sales to Taiwan in October, which included the initial delivery of a cutting-edge surface-to-air missile defense system, leading to vigorous military drills from China around Taiwan.
In response to the arms sale, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to the United States for its “commitment” to Taiwan’s defense.
Additionally, Taiwan has urged China to halt its aggressive military exercises close to its waters, arguing that they disrupt international shipping and trade and jeopardize regional peace and stability.
On the other hand, incoming President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to pursue an “America First” policy and has refrained from guaranteeing Taiwan’s defense if China were to invade during his tenure.
Trump remarked that if Taiwan seeks U.S. protection, it should be prepared to compensate for it.
“Taiwan should pay us for defense,” Trump stated in July. “You know, we’re no different than an insurance company.”
