No criminal activity is suspected, according to an NYPD spokesperson, who did not disclose specifics regarding the medical event. The 58-year-old driver was transported to a hospital for further evaluation and is currently in stable condition.
A 49-year-old woman suffered a minor leg injury, a 41-year-old woman had unspecified injuries, and a 9-year-old boy sustained a large laceration on his right thigh and was all taken to the hospital following the taxi collision with the pavement, just across from Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square.
The three remaining pedestrians, all women aged 19, 37, and 49, opted out of medical assistance.
A witness recounted to ABC 7 that the child’s mother was struck and ended up beneath the taxi, with the “still-spinning wheel” positioned on the child’s thigh.
“One gentleman went over [to] turn off the car, got in, and switched it off. There was a whole group of us that managed to remove the fender and lift the car back up,” said the unnamed witness.
The Macy’s store spans an entire block between 34th and 35th streets, establishing Herald Square as a favored shopping location for both locals and visitors alike. The area is adorned with numerous elegant Christmas window displays.
