Gumbel was 78 years old at the time of his passing.
As of now, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
“The holidays are meant to be joyful, yet they can be laced with sorrow,” Forer shared. “I just received the sad news that my dear friend Greg Gumbel has left us. He was the best announcer a young producer/director could hope for, always inclusive and unfailingly calm—except for that one time we shot a Super Bowl Anti-Drug PSA in the South Bronx at 2 AM and live gunfire broke out. That was the only moment Greg raised his voice and had a few pointed words for me, which I rightfully deserved.”
“Beyond being a consummate professional, he was an exceptionally kind and magnificent person. May his memory be a cherished blessing for his family and friends.”
Gumbel began his broadcasting career at ESPN in 1979, working as a reporter and anchor while also handling play-by-play duties. After a year with MSG covering the New York Yankees in 1988, he joined CBS as a college basketball play-by-play announcer in 1989 and became part of the renowned pregame show NFL Today in 1990.
Gumbel did not participate in last year’s NCAA Tournament, citing “family health issues,” as reported by multiple sources.
