Poilievre Vows to Resist Conservative Governments’ Adoption of Leftist Policies, in Conversation with Peterson
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre asserts his commitment to resisting the trend of conservative governments worldwide adopting leftist and globalist policies once he becomes prime minister.
Poilievre made these statements during a podcast interview with Canadian psychologist and author Jordan Peterson, shared on social media platform X on Jan. 2.
In the interview, Poilievre criticized conservative leaders who have veered towards leftist policies after being elected to accommodate various political ideologies under one umbrella. He warned that such a strategy leads to disastrous consequences like inflation, deficits, and crime.
He firmly stated, “I will fiercely resist the temptation to adopt socialist policies because I know it will only worsen people’s lives by the end of my term.”
When questioned by Peterson about his sincerity in these intentions versus campaign slogans, Poilievre referenced his long-standing advocacy for reducing the government’s size and enhancing personal freedoms. He highlighted an essay he wrote in 1999 outlining his plans as prime minister, which echoed his recent campaign speeches.
Poilievre outlined his plans as prime minister to trim federal bureaucracy, cut unnecessary spending on government consultants, reduce foreign aid, and limit corporate welfare. He also pledged to lower deficits, taxes, and promote economic growth through the free enterprise system.
Discussing the national debt-to-GDP ratio, Poilievre emphasized the need for a robust economy to support the country and reduce the relative debt size.
Recently, the NDP joined other opposition parties in expressing intentions to move non-confidence motions against the Liberal government.
Poilievre predicted that upon the House’s return in late January, there would be a series of votes on confidence motions, testing the sincerity of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh’s promises.
Trudeau is contemplating his next steps during the winter break amid mounting calls within the Liberal caucus for a change in leadership.
As speculations surround a possible prorogation of the Parliament by the Liberal government, Poilievre urged that any leadership decisions should not prolong the election process.
The next federal election is scheduled to happen on or before Oct. 20, 2025.
