Cease-Fire Deal Reached Between Israel and Hamas, Pending Approval from Netanyahu Cabinet
Qatar’s prime minister announced the terms of a six-week cease-fire, involving the exchange of 33 hostages for an unspecified number of prisoners.
Israel and Hamas have agreed on a deal that will commence on Sunday, Jan. 19, encompassing a swap of hostages and prisoners, a six-week cease-fire period, and allowing access to relief aid for Gaza.
The specifics of the deal were unveiled at a press conference in Doha on Jan. 15 by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, following negotiations mediated by Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
As part of the agreement, Hamas will release 33 Israeli captives, comprising civilians from various groups, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Israel will move away from populated areas toward the east, positioning forces along the Gaza border to facilitate the prisoner swap, return of human remains, and resettlement of displaced persons.
The initial phase will focus on increasing relief aid flow to all parts of Gaza, rehabilitating essential facilities, and allowing the entry of necessary supplies for individuals displaced by the conflict.
