Johnston & Murphy Shoe Retailer Closes Canadian Stores Due to Increasing Costs

Johnston & Murphy, a shoe and clothing retailer, has shuttered its Canadian stores.

The U.S. company made the announcement in an online message to customers, informing them that e-commerce orders for Canada are no longer being accepted.

A spokesperson named Marisa Drew explained in an email that the company had five stores in Canada, including locations at Toronto Pearson Airport, Vaughan Mills, and Mapleview Centre malls near Toronto.

Drew attributed the closures to increasing operating costs that restricted Johnston & Murphy’s retail opportunities.

The company is currently restructuring its international e-commerce operations to maintain a digital presence in Canada and will continue serving customers through wholesale partnerships with brands like Factory Shoe, Leclerc Chaussures, and Duggers.

Founded in 1850 as a boot and shoe manufacturer in Newark, N.J., Johnston & Murphy later expanded its offerings to include clothing for men and women.
