Huntington Beach Votes Unanimously to Reject Sanctuary City Status, Defying Governor Newsom – One America News Network

City council members in Huntington Beach, California have unanimously voted to designate the city as a “non-sanctuary” city, challenging Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom’s future plans for the state during President Donald Trump’s second term.

“As City Council Members noted, the purpose of this Resolution is to purposefully bypass the Governor’s attempts to undermine the valuable work of federal immigration authorities and to affirm the City’s collaboration with the federal government, the Trump Administration, and Border Czar Tom Homan’s initiatives,” the members stated.

“This new City policy and Declaration are rooted in common sense, support our law enforcement, and enhance public safety in the City. The actions of the Governor do not do this. Neither the Governor nor the State Legislature can impede the City’s voluntary collaboration with federal authorities, nor compel the City to contravene federal laws such as Title 8 Section 1324 concerning the harboring of undocumented immigrants,” the statement elaborated.

Tonight, the Huntington Beach City Council voted to approve the initiative brought by Mayor Pat Burns to Declare the City of Huntington Beach a “Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime.”

Governor Newsom (D-Calif.) has explicitly promised to “Trump-proof” California by proposing a legal defense fund of up to $50 million, funded by California taxpayers, for the state’s Department of Justice – aimed at “combating” Trump’s policies related to “climate change, immigration, and abortion.”

In contrast, many social media users have voiced their opinions that since Trump has indicated he would allow states to determine abortion policies, and given the low likelihood of California becoming a predominantly conservative state, including abortion policies in the “anti-Trump” legal defense strategy seems questionable and illogical. Numerous individuals have also suggested it may be a scheme to raise funds.

“This funding agreement solidifies California’s commitment to stand as a buffer against Trump’s extreme agenda,” asserted Senate Budget Chair Scott Weiner.

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns brought forth the resolution to “intentionally bypass the Governor’s attempts to undermine the valuable work of federal immigration authorities and to declare the city’s cooperation with the federal government, the Trump Administration, and Border Czar Tom Homan’s efforts.”

“In California specifically, combating crime is challenging enough with the lenient criminal laws and lack of enforcement. The State must refrain from obstructing local law enforcement, cease restraining our police officers and California’s municipalities, and return to the mission of safeguarding innocent citizens. Ultimately, the State should refrain from violating federal immigration laws or encouraging cities to contravene these laws,” added Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates.

The newly established “non-sanctuary city” legislation went into effect immediately.
