Decades of Hostility over Alberta-Ottawa Oil and Gas Dispute Come to Light

The ongoing discord between Alberta and Ottawa regarding the oil and gas sector has resurfaced amid discussions on how to address potential U.S. tariffs.

The conflict came to light when Alberta Premier Danielle Smith refused to sign a joint statement with Ottawa regarding potential responses to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.

Although the joint statement did not mention blocking oil and gas exports, Smith objected to federal officials mentioning the possibility of export tariffs on the energy sector as a response to Trump’s tariffs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Smith of not prioritizing the country’s interests, while Smith argued that Alberta has been disadvantaged by Ottawa in the past.

Smith referred to past events, such as the National Energy Program under former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and the cancellation of pipeline projects, to support her position. Trudeau defended his government’s actions, including the purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline project.
