Pete Buttigieg Weighs 2026 Senate Bid After Gary Peters’ Announcement – One America News Network

Pete Buttigieg is reportedly weighing the possibility of campaigning for a Senate seat from Michigan in 2026.

The former Secretary of Transportation and 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful is said to be taking a “serious look” at a Senate bid following Senator Gary Peters’ (D-Mich) announcement that he will not seek re-election.
“Pete is considering all possible avenues to remain impactful and serve,” a source familiar with the millennial Democrat’s thought process shared with Fox News Digital.
“He’s grateful for the consideration and is examining the opportunity seriously.”
Axios was the first to report on Buttigieg’s potential Senate candidacy.
“I always believed there would come a time when I would step aside and hand over the reins to the next generation. I never viewed congressional service as a lifelong commitment,” Peters stated in an interview with the Detroit News on Tuesday.
“Going back to when I first won a House seat in 2008, I thought I would serve for a few terms and then return to private life,” he continued.
“Our founding fathers envisioned Congress members as citizens serving a few terms and then going back home. I concur,” Peters mentioned in a recorded statement. “After serving three terms in the House and two in the Senate, I believe it’s time for me to pen a few more paragraphs in my current chapter and pass the reins on. Therefore, I will not seek re-election in 2026.”
In response to Peters’ announcement, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) spokesman David Bergstein commented, “No Republican has secured a victory in a Michigan Senate race in three decades, including last election cycle when Democrats gained an open Senate seat even amidst Trump’s victory in the state – thus, Democrats are poised to retain this seat in 2026.”
Conversely, Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) responded, saying, “Gary Peters is in tune with the sentiments of voters. After years of neglecting illegal immigration and damaging his state’s auto industry, Michigan would be better off without him. We are dedicated to providing a candidate who will partner with President Trump to restore the economic prosperity and security of our country.”
Political analysts have also mentioned state Senator Mallory McMorrow as a potential candidate, known for her notable floor speech in 2022.
