Lord Mandelson has stated that his 2019 remark labeling Donald Trump a “danger to the world” was “ill-judged and wrong.”
The former Labour official has been appointed as the next UK ambassador to the US, although there are concerns about whether President Trump will receive him.
In an interview with Fox News, Lord Mandelson retracted his earlier criticisms made during Trump’s first presidential term.

The 71-year-old expressed to the US TV channel favored by conservatives: “I now view my previous comments regarding President Trump as ill-judged and wrong.
“I believe perspectives on the president have evolved since then.
“People have been notably impressed, not just by the remarkable second mandate he has garnered from the American electorate, but also by the dynamism and zeal he has brought to both his campaign and his administration.”
Numerous Labour members, including the current Foreign Secretary David Lammy, have criticized President Trump during and after his first term in office.
With them now in power and Trump back in control in Washington DC, their language has shifted to be more diplomatic.

Lord Mandelson previously remarked on the Alain Elkann Interviews podcast that “What Donald Trump embodies and advocates is contrary to the mainstream British sentiment.”
He further stated: “Even those who may harbor a hidden admiration for Donald Trump due to his persona still view him as reckless and a threat to global stability.”
The prospective ambassador has criticized Trump’s stance towards a previous ambassador and labeled the president as “nearly a white nationalist and a racist.”

In his current remarks, Lord Mandelson commended Mr Trump, describing him as a “nice” and “fair-minded individual” who could emerge as “one of the most significant American presidents of my lifetime.”
He concluded by stating: “With the approach he is adopting towards governance, which appears to us in the UK to be more organized and coherent, and his clarity in objectives, it gives us hope and boosts our confidence.”
