Trump Plans to Hold Discussions with Canada and Mexico This Morning

The 25 percent tariffs are set to begin at midnight.

President Donald Trump told reporters Sunday night that he planned to discuss his upcoming tariffs with the Canadian and Mexican leaders on Monday morning. He mentioned, “I’m speaking with Prime Minister Trudeau tomorrow morning and I’m also speaking with Mexico tomorrow morning. We put tariffs on. They owe us a lot of money, and I’m sure they’re going to pay.”

Trump stated that the 25 percent tariffs on non-energy imports were imposed due to Canada and Mexico not doing enough to help balance their trade deficits with the U.S. under the USMCA agreement. He emphasized the need to address these issues before the tariffs can be lifted, saying, “They have to balance out their trade, number one. And they’ve got to stop people from pouring into our country. We’ve stopped it. They haven’t stopped it.”

Regarding the retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada and Mexico, Trump expressed his resolve to stand by his policy, warning that it could lead to a trade war unless an agreement is reached. He emphasized the importance of stopping the illicit flow of goods and people, including fentanyl, into the U.S.

Despite the challenges, Trump decided to reduce tariffs on Canadian oil and gas to 10 percent after negotiations. He defended his tariffs on the top U.S. trading partners and emphasized the long-term benefits for America.

Vice President JD Vance echoed the tough stance, noting that the U.S. is moving into the “consequences phase” and demanding accountability from allied nations like Canada regarding military spending.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the $1.3 billion border security plan introduced by Canada and called for the removal of tariffs to avoid increased costs for both countries.

Trump also hinted at announcing tariffs to address trade imbalances with the EU in the near future.
