Singer Alicia Keys, whose full name is Alicia Augello Cook, confidently took the stage during the Grammy Awards on Sunday, advocating for DEI initiatives as “a gift” in the United States and around the globe.

“Now is not the time to silence diverse voices. We have witnessed talented and hardworking individuals from various backgrounds sharing their perspectives, and it transforms the landscape,” Keys, 44, said while accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.
“DEI is not a threat; it’s a precious gift. The more voices we have, the stronger the sound,” she added.
“When destructive forces attempt to tear us down, we rise from the ashes like a phoenix. As evident tonight, music serves as an unstoppable language that unites us all. It’s truly magnificent,” she continued. “Let’s continue to show up with compassion and empathy, what I refer to as soul care. Keep opening the doors to the dreams of a better world.
Furthermore, singer and actress Lady Gaga expressed her support for “trans people,” stating: “Trans people are not invisible. They deserve love, and the queer community deserves to be uplifted.”
This year’s activism at the Grammys, deemed “woke,” is a significant response to President Donald Trump’s election victory and his recent executive orders. Trump has enacted orders to reverse “discriminatory” diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, along with ordering the military to prohibit transgender individuals from enlisting.
The executive order titled “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness” reverses a policy set by former President Joe Biden that allowed transgender-identifying service members to enlist and receive financial coverage for surgeries and hormone treatments related to gender transition. It reinstates a policy from Trump’s first presidency, as reported by NBC News.
“It is the policy of the United States Government to maintain high standards for troop readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity,” the order states. “This policy is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health considerations for individuals with gender dysphoria. It is also inconsistent with changing pronouns or the use of pronouns that falsely represent an individual’s sex.”
Trump has further elaborated on his stance regarding DEI initiatives.
“My administration has taken measures to eliminate all discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion nonsense — which is what these policies are — across the government and private sector,” Trump stated last month.
President Trump also mentioned in August that, “If you want a sex change or a social justice seminar, then do it elsewhere; but you won’t do it in the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, Space Force, or the United States Marines — Sorry.”
The ban on transgender individuals in the military extends to anyone who identifies as a gender other than the sex assigned at birth, citing mental unfitness.
“The United States military’s clear mission is to protect the American people and our homeland as the most lethal and effective fighting force in the world,” the executive order states. “Success in this critical mission requires a focus on developing the necessary warrior ethos, and the pursuit of military excellence cannot be compromised to accommodate political agendas or ideologies that may harm unit cohesion.”
“In alignment with military objectives and longstanding Department of Defense policy, claiming a false ‘gender identity’ that differs from one’s biological sex does not meet the rigorous standards required for military service,” the order continued. “Considering the hormonal and surgical interventions involved, adopting a gender identity that contradicts one’s biological sex conflicts with a soldier’s pledge to maintain an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even personally.”
