Designating Crime Cartels as Terrorist Organizations Could Aid in Combatting Fentanyl, According to RCMP Commissioner

RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme welcomes the federal plan to designate organized crime cartels as terrorist entities in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.

In a recent interview, Duheme expressed that listing criminal organizations would provide the Mounties with additional tools to bring charges and uphold the law.

Duheme also acknowledges the significance of appointing a national fentanyl czar, as it would centralize oversight of the dangerous drug under one individual.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Canada due to the flow of migrants and drugs, including fentanyl, he has agreed to delay the tariffs for a month to assess Canada’s compliance with his demands.

The federal government’s $1.3 billion plan announced in December aims to enhance security and surveillance along the Canada-U.S. border. Additionally, the appointment of a fentanyl czar and the move to classify drug cartels as terrorist organizations have also been announced.
