Demand for Tourist Tax Increases due to Long Commutes of Workers




Reports from essential workers reveal the difficult choice between food and shelter, as union leaders urge for higher tourist taxes to address the housing affordability crisis.
A growing number of homes are being transformed into short-term holiday rentals, leaving workers with limited options for long-term rentals in some areas, a housing crisis investigation uncovered on Feb. 7.
Over 165,000 homes in Australia are now being used for un-hosted short-term rentals, with the average listing in Sydney remaining vacant 80% of the year, according to Unions NSW.
One teacher, located 50 kilometers away from their school, shared their struggle of having to wake up at 4am daily due to the lack of available local housing options.
