Denis Coderre Withdraws from Quebec Liberal Leadership Race Following Party’s Rejection

Former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre announces that he will not appeal the party’s decision to reject his candidacy for the Quebec Liberal leadership.

Coderre expresses his disappointment in a Facebook post on Tuesday night, stating that he feels “disgusted” by the situation, citing leaks and a biased outcome against him.

On Friday, the Quebec Liberal Party declared that Coderre’s attempt to join the race was denied and gave him five days to challenge the decision.

Prior to finalizing their choice, the party had indicated that they had not received all the necessary documents to confirm his candidacy, a claim that Coderre refutes.

Coderre’s eligibility had been in question after reports emerged that he owed around $400,000 in taxes to provincial and federal authorities, but Coderre clarified on Tuesday that all outstanding payments were settled and guaranteed.

Other contenders in the leadership competition, scheduled for June 14, include former federal cabinet minister Pablo Rodriguez, ex-CEO of the Fédération des Chambres de commerce Charles Milliard, tax attorney Marc Bélanger, and Beauce farmer Mario Roy.
