The 90-minute dialogue between Trump and Putin concluded with the American president asserting that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “must come to an end.”
“I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia,” Trump stated. “We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects. We both reflected on the rich history of our nations and acknowledged our successful collaboration during World War II, where both Russia and America made significant sacrifices. Our discussions encompassed the strengths of our nations and the potential benefits of working together. However, the priority, as we both agreed, is to halt the tragic loss of lives occurring in the Russia/Ukraine conflict. President Putin even echoed my strong campaign motto, ‘COMMON SENSE.’ We are determined to work closely together, including visiting each other’s countries. We have agreed to have our teams commence negotiations immediately, beginning with a call to President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, which I will be doing right now. I have enlisted Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiations, which I am confident will be fruitful. Many lives have been lost in a war that could have been averted had I been the President, yet now it must end, and no more lives should be sacrificed! I extend my gratitude to President Putin for his cooperation during this call and for the recent release of Marc Fogel, a remarkable individual I had the pleasure of welcoming at the White House last night. I believe this endeavor will lead to a successful resolution, hopefully in the near future!”
Additionally, both leaders expressed interest in visiting each other in the near future, marking a significant moment since no U.S. president has traveled to Russia since Barack Obama in 2013. This conversation signifies the first direct communication between a U.S. president and Putin since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Following his discussion with Putin, Trump reached out to Zelensky, who likewise conveyed his commitment to ending the war.
“I just spoke to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine,” Trump shared on Truth Social. “The conversation was very positive. He, just like President Putin, is eager for PEACE. We covered various aspects regarding the war, focusing primarily on the upcoming meeting scheduled for Friday in Munich, which will be led by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. I am optimistic that the outcomes of that meeting will be beneficial. It’s time to put an end to this absurd war that has resulted in immense and entirely unnecessary DEATH and DESTRUCTION. God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine!”
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are set to meet with President Zelensky in Munich, Germany, on Friday.
