Singh predicts NDP will face snap election if Carney becomes Liberal leader

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh believes he won’t need to choose between voting on tariff relief or triggering a government downfall because he foresees a snap election if Mark Carney wins the Liberal leadership.

Singh criticizes the government for not taking action on a relief package for workers affected by U.S. tariffs, noting that Parliament should have been reconvened by now if the issue was being taken seriously.

During a recent news conference in Vancouver, Carney refused to rule out calling a snap election should he secure the Liberal leadership.

Jennifer Howard, the NDP’s national campaign director, issued a memo to candidates and staff instructing them to be prepared for a possible election call as early as March 10, the day after the Liberal leadership vote.

The NDP already has approximately 140 candidates in place, and Singh asserts that the party will be well-prepared for an election campaign when it is announced.

As part of their campaign strategy, the NDP has promised to eliminate the GST on essential items like home heating, cell phone services, quick grocery items, diapers, and children’s clothing, according to Singh.
