Adobe Launches Free Photoshop App for Phones to Attract Younger Users – One America News Network

(Reuters) – On Tuesday, Adobe (ADBE.O) announced the launch of its Photoshop application for mobile devices, featuring a complimentary version alongside a premium offering priced at a competitive $7.99 monthly subscription.

Since its debut in 1990, Adobe’s image editing software has become so ubiquitous that “Photoshop” has entered common vernacular as a verb for photo enhancement. Historically, however, the software has incurred a cost, with the previous least expensive subscription being $9.99 per month for Apple’s (AAPL.O) iPad users.

Adobe has now introduced a free version tailored for Apple iPhone users, with plans to release an Android version shortly, according to Adobe officials. The paid version at $7.99 per month will include added features, expanded cloud storage, and access to the web-based edition of Photoshop for more extensive editing needs.

This initiative emerges as both Apple and Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google have integrated many of Photoshop’s longtime features into their mobile operating systems at no cost, allowing users to adjust photo colors and eliminate distractions without needing Photoshop.

Despite this, Adobe’s creative solutions continue to account for over half of its overall sales. The company recently revised its 2025 revenue projections, which fell short of analysts’ expectations.

Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe’s Vice President of Product Marketing for Creative Professional Applications, emphasized the company’s strategy to attract younger users who increasingly rely on their smartphones for photography and editing, seeking functionalities beyond basic operating system tools.

The free Photoshop app will incorporate features like photo layer separation, masking, and text addition—ideal for crafting visuals for podcasts, music playlists, or YouTube content.

“We dedicated significant effort to testing our app with our primary audience: the next-generation creators who predominantly use their phones. This app is designed specifically to cater to their creative expressions,” Subramaniam stated in an interview with Reuters.
