In his announcement on Monday, Trump noted that this investment will enhance America’s supremacy in Artificial Intelligence.
“This will generate hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity and strengthen America’s leadership in artificial intelligence and more,” Trump stated. “Semiconductors form the foundation of the 21st-century economy; without them, there can be no economy.”
C.C. Wei, the CEO of T.S.M.C., attended the announcement and emphasized that Trump’s initiative for domestic semiconductor production will indeed take place.
“The vision is becoming a reality,” Wei expressed.
This investment also seeks to evade tariffs that Trump had previously proposed on chip imports into the U.S.
“The motivation is straightforward: they won’t want to incur a 25%, 50%, or even a 100% tax,” Trump mentioned during the House Republican Issues Conference.
Since assuming office, Trump has facilitated a surge of significant investments in the U.S. Last December, he announced that SoftBank would invest over $100 billion in the country.
“He’s doing this because he is very optimistic about our nation following the election, and many others are also contributing substantial amounts of money,” Trump said about SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son.
Recently, Apple declared an even larger $500 billion investment in the United States.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has underscored the firm’s dedication to U.S. technological advancement.
“From doubling our Advanced Manufacturing Fund to building advanced technology in Texas, we’re excited to amplify our support for American manufacturing,” Cook stated. “We’ll continue to collaborate with individuals and companies across this nation to help foster an extraordinary new chapter in American innovation.”
In addition, Honda is reportedly transferring production of its new Civic to the U.S. from Mexico to circumvent the 25% tariff that Trump intends to implement on goods produced in Mexico.
Trump is anticipated to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, along with an extra 10% tariff on China this Tuesday.
