Current Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) is ineligible to seek re-election due to term limits, setting the stage for the upcoming election in 2026. Candidates have until March 2026 to submit their paperwork ahead of the primary scheduled for June 2, 2026.
As reported by CBS News, a close associate of Harris stated that she is “seriously considering” a gubernatorial bid. However, pursuing the governorship would likely mean she would not run for president in 2028, a possibility she has also mentioned.
Additionally, past reports suggested that after her significant loss to President Donald Trump, Harris advised her closest aides to keep all political paths open for her future endeavors.
There are anticipated to be many candidates vying to succeed Newsom, but Harris’ participation could discourage other potential Democratic contenders from entering the race.
Since her defeat in November, Harris has largely remained out of the public eye. Starting in January, various sources noted that she plans to focus on writing books about her political experiences as well as her passions for food and cooking.
In California, all candidates are listed on the primary ballot, and the two candidates with the highest number of votes, irrespective of party affiliation, proceed to the general election.
