The individual was reportedly identified as a “suicidal person” who had traveled to Washington D.C. from Indiana.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
“As officers approached, the individual displayed a firearm, leading to an armed standoff during which our personnel discharged their weapons,” said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Before the shooting, the Secret Service had been alerted by local law enforcement about the man, who was considered a potential suicide risk.
“The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, and his condition remains unknown. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among Secret Service personnel. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division Force Investigations Team is conducting the investigation into the incident, as is protocol for all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in Washington, D.C.,” the agency stated.
The agency also confirmed that Secret Service personnel did not sustain any injuries during the encounter.
During the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
