Former Congresswoman Katie Porter of Orange County has declared her candidacy for the 2026 California gubernatorial election, as Governor Gavin Newsom is limited by term length.

This past Monday, Porter shared a video on X, announcing her gubernatorial run. Newsom’s term is expected to conclude on January 4th, 2027, according to Ballotpedia.
“What California needs now is a dose of hope and a lot of grit. That’s why I’m running for Governor,” Porter stated alongside the campaign video.
In the video, Porter pledges that, if she becomes governor, she will confront the “dangerous leaders” from the Trump era, showcasing brief clips of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Mike Johnson, Mitch McConnell, and JD Vance—though she does not elaborate.
Porter emphasizes the necessity for “new ideas” on economic issues, climate change, food prices, housing, healthcare, and “fundamental rights,” featuring a quick clip of a transgender woman, suggesting that transgender rights are “at risk.”
“I initially ran for office to hold Trump accountable… to prevent him from causing harm to Californians,” she mentions later in the promotional clip, reflecting sentiments previously voiced by other Democrats like New York Attorney General Letitia James.
She affirms her dedication to “abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, and immigrant rights,” as the video displays an individual holding a sign that reads: “No Human Is Illegal!!! Immigrants Are Our Neighbors!!”
Moreover, Porter expresses her readiness to challenge “Big Oil, Big Banks, or Big Pharma for taking advantage of people.”
Porter, who was mentored by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), has such a significant bond with her mentor that one of her children is named after Warren.
Other candidates vying to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, California Superintendent Tony Thurmond, former State Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, former State Controller Betty Yee, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
There are also speculations about former Vice President Kamala Harris contemplating a run for the governorship.
Porter remarked in December that Harris entering the race would likely have a “field-clearing effect,” implying that most Californians would inevitably back Harris.
“She wouldn’t run against Kamala,” a Porter adviser told CNN, “and likely none of the others will either.”
