During his address on the House floor on Thursday, the minority leader expressed that although the continuing resolution (CR) is flawed, the repercussions for Americans resulting from a shutdown would be far more severe.
Schumer (D-N.Y.) insisted that it is his responsibility to make the best decision to reduce the negative impacts on the American populace. Thus, he has decided to cast his vote for keeping the government open.
“Although the Republican bill is far from ideal, the ramifications of a government shutdown for America are significantly worse. Without a doubt, the Republican bill poses challenges,” he stated. “It is not a straightforward CR. It is highly partisan and fails to address many essential needs across the country, but allowing Donald Trump to gain even more authority during a shutdown is a far worse alternative.”
“Unless Congress intervenes, the federal government will cease operations tomorrow at midnight. I have reiterated that there are no winners in a government shutdown. However, the most vulnerable Americans who depend on federal programs for food, medical care, and financial stability will suffer the most,” Schumer added.
Schumer emphasized that neither supporters nor opponents of the CR desire a government shutdown.
He mentioned that those against the CR are seeking greater responsibility from Republicans.
