Scottish Parliament Rejects Guidance on Single Sex Spaces as Sturgeon Steps Down
The Conservatives accused former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon of ‘setting fire’ to women’s rights as the SNP, Greens, and Liberal Democrats defeated the motion.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay claimed that women’s rights in Scotland have been “set on fire” during a parliamentary debate on single-sex spaces, coinciding with Sturgeon’s resignation as an MSP.
Findlay called for clarity on the need for single-sex spaces after a controversial employment tribunal involving NHS Fife nurse Sandie Peggie, who objected to a male trans-identified doctor using the women’s changing room.
‘Divisive Self-ID Policy’
Findlay highlighted the government’s failure to protect women’s rights across various institutions.
He urged Sturgeon to support the Conservative motion, claiming it could help rehabilitate her record and legacy.
Findlay insisted that John Swinney should halt the divisive self-ID policy and ensure public bodies respect women’s rights to single-sex spaces.
The SNP reiterated its support for the Equality Act 2010 during the debate, with Scottish Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville emphasizing the government’s commitment to evidence-based decision-making.
Across the political spectrum, concerns were raised about the government’s approach to gender ideology and single-sex spaces.
‘Pernicious’ Gender Ideology
Findlay criticized the promotion of gender ideology within Scotland’s institutions, calling it regressive and harmful to women’s rights.
MSPs voted to defeat the Conservative motion and uphold the Equality Act 2010, stressing the importance of compliance with the law.
Sturgeon addressed the media before her parliamentary appearance, expressing concern about the tone of the debate and the treatment of trans individuals.
She announced her decision not to seek reelection, following a protest at an SNP event where she was heckled by opponents.
Sturgeon’s resignation marked the end of a long political career, with her husband facing legal issues related to the SNP’s finances.
Despite the challenges, Sturgeon emphasized her continued support for SNP members and their journey towards independence.
