February Wholesale Trade Figures in Canada Show 0.3 Percent Increase, According to Statistics Canada

According to Statistics Canada, wholesale trade, excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons as well as oilseed and grain, increased by 0.3 percent to $85.7 billion in February.

The rise in sales was driven by gains in just two of the seven subsectors.

Sales in the machinery, equipment, and supplies subsector grew by 7.1 percent to $19 billion for the month, while the food, beverage, and tobacco subsector increased by 0.5 percent to $15.5 billion.

On the other hand, the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector experienced the largest decrease, dropping by 3.1 percent to $14.3 billion.

In terms of volume, wholesale sales, excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons as well as oilseed and grain, rose by 0.2 percent in February.

Statistics Canada has recently started including oilseed and grain, as well as the petroleum and petroleum products subsector, in its wholesale trade analysis. However, this data is being excluded from the monthly analysis until enough historical data is available.
