Jamie Raskin Hits a New Low with Threats of Retribution Against Foreign Leaders Collaborating with Team Trump
Prioritizing partisan politics over patriotism (if it exists), top Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin has now openly threatened retaliation against foreign leaders collaborating with the Trump administration.
While he attempts to frame it as a battle against “authoritarianism in our country,” this is merely a facade for aggressive threats.
Raskin (D-Md.) made his comments on the “Pod Save America” podcast, following a remark from progressive host Tommy Vietor, who referenced (presumably left-leaning) Latin American experts advising Democrats to caution against “any foreign government that engages in the extraordinary rendition of American citizens.”
Here’s a reality check: No one is suggesting any “extraordinary rendition of American citizens.”
Democrats are consistently trying to mislead the public into believing that Team Trump is behind such actions to distract from their opposition to the administration’s deportation of illegal immigrants — which is hardly authoritarian.
Unsurprisingly, Raskin embraced Vietor’s insinuation, explicitly naming El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele as someone the Democrats “will not view positively” “when we return to power — and we will.”
His grievance is that Bukele is not sending Kilmar Abrego Garcia (a citizen of El Salvador) back to the United States.
Abrego has no legal entitlement to remain in the U.S., although the Trump administration made an error by deporting him without addressing a prior 2019 order that stated he could be deported, just not to El Salvador, due to his claims of being targeted by a gang there.
(Bukele has effectively dismantled all the gangs in El Salvador, irritating U.S. “Latin American experts” like those Vietor likely relies on.)
Raskin is also clearly frustrated that Bukele is supporting Trump’s efforts to “deport violent-criminal illegal migrants,” yet that’s still no justification for threatening a foreign leader.
Historically, Republicans have not penalized foreign leaders who aided President Barack Obama in his initiatives; it’s outrageous to drag other countries into our domestic conflicts.
Raskin wraps his comments in rhetoric about “the descent into fascism in America,” but he’s the one undermining nonpartisan standards in our political landscape.
