Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker, has declared his intention to run for Congress, inspired by the recent attempt on President Donald Trump’s life and the president’s courageous response to the traumatic event.

The 48-year-old Feely is set to campaign as a Republican for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District during the 2026 midterm elections, succeeding Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), who is seeking the governorship of Arizona.
“The legal challenges that Democrats posed against President Trump and witnessing him being shot was a pivotal moment for me. I vividly remember contemplating a run for office on that day,” Feely remarked.
“I truly feel that God is calling me to serve, and I believe this work embodies civil service. I suspect we lack politicians willing to enter office not for their own gain but for the greater good, and I see it as a selfless endeavor,” he added. “This is a commitment to civil service.”
According to Feely, his experience on the executive committee of the NFL Players’ Association has provided him with essential leadership and negotiation skills that will benefit him in Congress.
“During one instance, we faced a lockout initiated by the team owners, which required us to negotiate,” he recalled. “The skills needed for those negotiations are akin to those required in the House and Senate, as this is a constant aspect of governmental operations. We recently witnessed this with the continuing resolution just a month ago.”
Feely stressed that he sees illegal immigration as a critical issue facing Arizona and intends to make it a central focus of his congressional campaign.
“Democrats insisted that a legislative solution was necessary for fixing the border. During that time, President Biden stood idly by as millions of undocumented individuals entered our nation, despite the fact that President Trump could have addressed this in just three months,” Feely explained.
Over a 14-year NFL career, Feely played for teams including the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears.
