Food, Clothing, Home Environment, Cleaning Tips to Avoid Dry Skin and Prevent Eczema in Winter

Eczema, also known as dry dermatitis, is common in winter. When the temperature drops, the secretion of sebum decreases. Therefore skin moisture is lost easily. And the skin becomes dry, causing itching, inflammation, peeling, scaling, and other problems.

Hu Yihsuan, a dermatologist at the Yes Clinic in Taiwan, said that getting rid of dry skin can prevent eczema in winter. She also shared tips on how to prevent and deal with itching in winter, from bathing to food, clothing, home environment, and so on.

Bathing

Hu pointed out that during bathing, people should pay attention to the following points to reduce dry skin.

1. Before bathing: choose mild bath products
Try to choose a bath product that does not contain soap or alkali and its pH value is close to that of skin, which is about 5.5.

Hu said bath products with strong cleaning power and alkaline components are likely to cause dry skin. The best option is mild surfactants with simple ingredients, which can reduce the chance of skin allergy.

2. During bathing: water temperature should not be too high
Too hot water can easily wash away sebum, making the skin unable to lock in moisture effectively.

3. After bathing: apply lotion within five minutes
Within five minutes after bathing, it is called “the golden period of moisturizing and water locking.” Hu said that after drying the body, apply lotion when the skin is still damp to achieve the best moisturizing effect.

Hu said that applying lotion frequently is the best way to relieve itching. Applying too much lotion bought from the counter of the pharmacies can damage the skin easily if the steroid content is high.

So how to choose a lotion? Hu suggested that in addition to looking at whether the pH value is close to that of the skin, people can also choose moisturizing products that are rich in plant sterols, vitamin A, and vitamin E.

Clothing and Home Environment

For people with rashes or sensitive skin, Hu suggested that the best choice for their intimate clothing is pure cotton. She said that nowadays, it is popular to wear thermal clothing in winter. However, since it is made of chemical fiber when the skin feels hot and it becomes more sensitive, therefore thermal clothing is not suitable for all skin types.

Hu said that some people like to turn on the heating fan and blow directly on the skin in winter. And this is likely to cause dry and itchy skin. She suggested that by measuring the humidity at home, you can get a humidifier to improve the dry environment accordingly.

Food

In terms of diet, Hu said that if there is a rash on the skin already, then people should not eat too much nourishing or spicy food such as ginger duck, sesame oil chicken, and spicy hot pot. She said, for example, a patient with eczema who was almost cured broke out again after eating ginger duck three times a week.

Hu also pointed out that there are many foods with refined starches and foods with a high glycemic index on the market, which are bad for health and also make eczema worse.

Hu believes that eating more fresh raw foods, as well as foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin E, can prevent dry skin and achieve good skin.
