14 Democrats Unite with Republicans in Resolution Condemning Biden’s Actions on the Border

Fourteen Democrats voted alongside House Republicans in passing a resolution on Tuesday that condemns President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

The resolution specifically criticizes Biden, as well as Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, for their refusal to take executive action on border issues. Introduced by Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Texas, the non-binding resolution passed with a vote of 226-193.

This is the second time in recent weeks that Republicans, with the support of 14 Democrats, including 11 who voted in favor on Tuesday, have passed a resolution denouncing Biden’s handling of the border crisis. Previously on January 17, Republicans and the group of Democrats voted 225-187 to condemn the Biden administration’s open-border policies.

De La Cruz introduced this resolution on the same day as Biden’s State of the Union address, during which Republicans were outraged by what they perceived as the president’s shifting of blame. In fact, De La Cruz delivered the Spanish-language rebuttal on behalf of Republicans to Biden’s SOTU address.

“The resolution highlights the critical need for the Biden administration to take swift action to address the crisis at our border,” De La Cruz stated. “We urge the administration to immediately exercise their available authorities to regain control of the situation and safeguard the interests of the American people.”

The vote occurred on the same day that Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, announced the establishment of the Democrats for Border Security Task Force. Cuellar, one of the 14 Democrats who voted with Republicans on both resolutions condemning Biden, emphasized the importance of Democrats advocating for strong border security while respecting immigrants’ rights.

The task force is endorsing the $118 billion bipartisan border security legislation and foreign aid package that was approved by the Senate early last month but faced challenges once congressional Republicans reviewed the terms of the deal.

The Democrats who supported Tuesday’s resolution include Reps. Yadira Caraveo, D-Co., Angie Craig, D-Mn., Cuellar, Sharice Davids, D-Kan., Don Davis, D-N.C., Jared Golden, D-Maine, Steven Horsford, D-Nev., Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, Susie Lee, D-Nev., Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., Frank Mrvan, D-Ind., Mary Peltola, D-Ala., Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wa., and Eric Sorensen, D-Ill.
