According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, Rupnow was confirmed as the individual who opened fire during a study hall at Abundant Life Christian School on Monday. Reports indicated that she was discovered with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” and died en route to the hospital.
AP News initially reported the shooter as 17 years old, which was later clarified by police as incorrect.
Barnes mentioned that officers are currently investigating Rupnow’s residence and have been in communication with her father and other relatives, who are cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation. Out of respect for the family, he refrained from disclosing further details regarding the shooter.
“He lost someone as well,” Barnes stated, referring to Rupnow’s father. “And so we’re not going to rush the information. We’ll take our time and ensure we conduct our due diligence.”
Additionally, Barnes confirmed that Rupnow utilized a handgun during the shooting and that a motive for the incident has not yet been established.
“I don’t know why, and I feel like if we did know why, we could prevent these tragedies from occurring,” he expressed to the media.
The identities of the teacher and student who lost their lives in this event are still undisclosed and have not been released by authorities.
Barnes reported that two of the six individuals injured are students in critical condition. Three students and a teacher were hospitalized with less severe injuries; two individuals have since been discharged.
He further indicated that he does not believe the school had a resource officer present nor metal detectors, although it was equipped with security cameras and other emergency measures.
