President-elect Donald Trump expressed his support for Mike Johnson as House speaker on Monday after a tumultuous month regarding government funding that stirred chaos among Republicans and raised questions about his leadership aspirations.

This endorsement comes after Trump and Johnson (R-La.) had differences over the Speaker’s choice not to temporarily suspend the nation’s debt ceiling, though he continued to support Johnson to keep his position going into January.
“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, and religious man,” the incoming president stated on Truth Social. “He will do the right thing, and we will keep on WINNING. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”
Trump’s backing could be crucial for Johnson, who can only afford limited GOP dissent and still secure the Speaker role.
Johnson cannot lose more than one Republican vote for Speaker, presuming every member is present for the vote.
The sign of support appeared at the end of a post where Trump celebrated his electoral success and criticized Democrats for operating a “very expensive ‘sinking ship,’” and “embracing DOJ & FBI WEAPONIZATION against their political opponent, ME.”
“BUT IT DIDN’T WORK, IT WAS A DISASTER!!!” Trump asserted. “LET’S NOT WASTE THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN. The American public needs IMMEDIATE relief from all the destructive policies of the last Administration.”
At that time, Trump aimed to tie federal spending to eliminating the debt limit, along with Tesla founder Elon Musk and other fiscal conservatives in the House Republican conference to discard earlier versions of the funding bill.
On December 20th, Congress approved a significantly scaled-back version of the legislation, which left out the debt ceiling clause while still making cuts to other expensive elements.
