AARP Poll Shows Strong Preference for Trump Among Older Arizona Voters
A new poll from the U.S.’s largest organization for older Americans reveals that voters over the age of 50 in Arizona strongly favor Donald Trump in the upcoming election rematch in November. This highlights a potential weakness in support for Democrat Joe Biden.
According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) poll released on Wednesday, Arizona voters overall prefer Republican Trump over Biden by 45% to 37%, with 11% supporting independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Trump’s greatest lead is among voters aged 50 and older, where he leads 49% to 39%, showing a new vulnerability for Biden, whose support among various demographics has decreased since 2020. Among women voters over 50 in Arizona, Biden is tied with Trump, the AARP poll indicates.
Exit polls from NBC News after the 2020 election showed that Arizona voters over 50 favored Trump over Biden by 52% to 47%. CNN exit polls showed that voters aged 50 to 64 favored Trump 55% to 45%, while those over 65 favored him by a narrow margin of 50% to 49%.
In 2020, Biden won Arizona by fewer than 11,000 votes.
The weakness for Biden in the AARP poll does not indicate a broader party split, as Arizona voters overall favor Democrat Ruben Gallego over Republican Kari Lake by 48% to 45% in the state’s Senate race, with a tie among voters over 50.
On Thursday, Biden’s campaign is launching “Seniors for Biden-Harris” in Arizona with bingo events. First lady Jill Biden will be in Arizona on Saturday to address seniors.
Biden has taken steps to lower costs for insulin and other prescription drugs, reduce the price of hearing aids, and ensure funding for Social Security. The Biden campaign has also announced plans to confront Trump over Republican threats to Social Security and Medicare in key states through advertising and press conferences.
