ACLU Plans to Challenge Biden’s Border Order in Court
The American Civil Liberties Union has pledged to challenge President Joe Biden’s recent executive order regarding the U.S. southern border.
Biden’s order, issued on Tuesday, prohibits migrants from receiving asylum if U.S. officials determine that the border is overwhelmed. This action is poised to lead to the closure of a substantial portion of the southern border at midnight.
The ACLU argues that the executive order will endanger thousands of lives.
“These actions will not adequately address the situation at the border, nor will they resolve our flawed immigration system,” stated Deirdre Schifeling, the ACLU’s chief political and advocacy officer.
The civil liberties organization had previously taken legal action against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, including the asylum ban.
“We call on the administration to fulfill its campaign promise to reinstate asylum and allocate the necessary resources to tackle the challenges at the border. This is not just the ethically right thing to do – it is also good politics,” Schifeling asserted. “Voters consider immigration a major concern and expect our elected officials to advocate for solutions that are effective and aligned with our nation’s principles.”
Biden has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum regarding his border strategy, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., describing it as a facade.
“He had been trying to convince us all along that there was no possible way to resolve the chaos,” Johnson remarked. “Remember that he orchestrated it.”
Johnson pointed out that Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had issued 64 executive orders that facilitated the border’s openness.
“They deliberately allowed the border to remain open,” Johnson emphasized. “There is no doubt about it. Now he wants to issue a feeble executive order to address the issue. It is merely cosmetic. Everyone can see through it.”
