Actress Natasha Lyonne, known for her roles in “Russian Doll,” “Orange Is The New Black,” and “But I’m A Cheerleader,” has recently faced criticism after she vocally criticized the Trump administration, citing issues such as the inadequate “abortion access” for “12-year-old” girls.

“When I consider the children, like the 12-year-old girl who is unable to get an abortion… that truly tears me apart,” she remarked at the Independent Spirit Awards, an event celebrating standout independent films and television productions.
Lyonne further conveyed her “horror” regarding the effectiveness of former President Donald Trump’s campaign strategies.
“I am genuinely horrified by how calculated and effective this entire situation has been. There appears to be a significant disconnect concerning the individuals, specifically those who will truly suffer on a personal level, within the trans community, gay community, Black community, and women,” she elaborated.
“I despise violence, and I believe that’s a critical part of the issue. This country has always had its share of chaos, but to have a death toll and to be complicit in that is a bitter pill for me to swallow.”
“In addition to the discourse surrounding oligarchs and other matters, I keep thinking of the children, like the 12-year-old girl unable to get an abortion or similar situations, and that deeply distresses me. Yet, you know, ‘This is America,’ to quote Childish Gambino, Donald Glover,” she continued. “It’s not shocking, but it’s still horrific to witness up close, I suppose.”
Shortly after, social media users reacted, questioning why her primary focus was on abortion access for minors rather than addressing the more pressing issue of why a 12-year-old might become pregnant and engage in sexual activities in the first place.
“YIKES. What about the circumstances that led to the 12-year [old] girl getting pregnant in the first place?” one user remarked.
“What distresses me is that a 12-year-old is pregnant,” another chimed in, mocking Lyonne.
“Her choice of words would be amusing if it weren’t so appalling and tragic,” a third user noted.
In response to the backlash, Lyonne took to X to clarify her remarks.
“Not my most eloquent moment, I admit. To clarify: I intended to convey that in numerous states, should a young girl face rape—regardless of whether it’s from a family member—she may be compelled to bear that child against her wishes or risk facing harsher penalties than her abuser. That, in my view, represents an incredibly dark threat to a young woman’s life and autonomy, and I speak from personal experience,” she stated.
“There is an overwhelming amount of unnecessary and violent fallout affecting our most vulnerable groups, coupled with a pervasive fear of repercussions for speaking out. Honestly, I’m scared too. However, my greater concern lies with the mindless enthusiasm of mob mentality, which can too easily lead to dehumanization and the collapse of our collective moral compass. As someone who empathizes deeply, I struggle to convey my sorrow for the escalating suffering of individuals ensnared in this dangerous political maneuvering.”
