Adams Calls on Biden to Declare State of Emergency Regarding Migrant Crisis

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has called on President Joe Biden to declare a state of emergency over the migrant crisis, stating that the immigration system in the country has been broken for decades. Adams highlighted the strain the crisis is putting on the city, with nearly 100,000 asylum seekers arriving in New York City since last year. The city is spending $383 a night on housing each migrant household, amounting to $3.6 billion annually. If the current rate of arrival continues, the city could spend as much as $12 billion on the crisis by the summer of 2025. Adams emphasized that while New Yorkers’ compassion may be limitless, their resources are not, and local and state resources are insufficient to handle the crisis. He also called for federal immigration policies to change and for the federal government to adopt a “decompression strategy” at the southern border, enabling other cities to share the responsibility of taking in new arrivals.
