Adams: Memorial Day – Honoring the Sacrifice of Those Who Gave Their Lives for Our Freedom

Memorial Day is a time for us to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for our country’s freedom. It is a day for all of us to say, “We remember. We won’t forget.”

For some, Memorial Day is a day of personal loss, a time to remember those who never made it back home. This shifts the focus from barbecues to a day of reverence, reflection, and shared sorrow.

Is there a veteran you want to honor and remember this Memorial Day?

For me, that veteran is U.S. Army Captain Brian D. Haller, a fellow West Point Class of 1981 graduate.

I first met Brian when we served together in campus ministry as cadets. He was a devout follower of Jesus who mentored me in my faith journey.

Our paths diverged after graduation, with Brian heading to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and me to Fort Hood (now Cavazos), Texas. Sadly, I never saw him again.

On December 12, 1985, Brian was among the soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in Gander, Newfoundland. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

Despite the deep grief and loss, Brian’s widow, Melody, found hope in her faith and the promise of eternal life through Jesus. She testified of Brian’s commitment to Christ and the impact he had on others.

As we honor all those who served this Memorial Day, let us also pay special tribute to the families who have lost loved ones in service to our country. Let us never forget their sacrifice.
