Additional Democrats Support Resolution to Censure Justice Alito
Several House Democrats have joined Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., in a resolution to censure Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. This comes after a report by the New York Times revealed that an upside-down American flag, a symbol associated with Trump supporters contesting President Joe Biden’s victory, was flown outside Alito’s Virginia home following the 2020 election.
The Democrats supporting the resolution include Reps. Delia Ramirez and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Becca Balint of Vermont, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Kevin Mullin of California, Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, and Adriano Espaillat of New York.
“In addition to poor judgment, Justice Alito’s display of the American flag reflects a blatant demonstration of his political bias,” said Cohen in a statement introducing the resolution.
“By flying a flag that indicates his support for the insurrectionists of January 6th in front of his home, he has crossed a line. Furthermore, his involvement in ongoing litigation related to the 2020 election and the insurrection violates federal recusal laws and the Supreme Court’s ethics rules.
“There must be consequences to uphold the integrity and impartiality of the Supreme Court. We must ensure fair and unbiased proceedings. Justice Alito should face censure for his clear violations of the law and court regulations, and he should recuse himself from any other cases related to the 2020 election or January 6th.”
It is unlikely that the resolution will be brought to a vote in the Republican-controlled House.
