African American Farmers Seek Economic Assistance from President Trump
Black farmers in Georgia are looking to Donald Trump for economic solutions and rejecting Joe Biden’s economic policies.
A recent New York Times/Siena poll found that 20% of Black voters are leaning towards supporting Trump in the 2024 election, which is up about ten points from 2020. Despite Biden’s recent efforts to appeal to Black Americans, the 20% increase in costs brought on by his administration seems to be trumping those efforts.
“I think we did better under President Trump,” said John Slaughter, a 39-year-old black farmer from Buena Vista, Georgia, in an interview with the Times. “President Trump, he did something for us while he was in office. President Biden, what have you done for me?” Slaughter expressed that Democrats only seem to focus on helping business owners during election time.
Many farmers in Georgia are fed up with the bureaucracy and red tape that hinders their work, causing them to fall behind on business loans and ultimately lose farm deeds.
Slaughter noted that the Trump administration assisted in correcting a paperwork error that allowed his family to regain the deed to their farm.
Another Georgia farmer, Andrew Smith Sr., who previously voted for Biden, mentioned that he is now leaning towards Trump due to the Biden administration’s failure to protect small farmers. He also highlighted the struggles his farm faces with paperwork issues, expressing frustration over being told they can’t even use what they have.
A third Georgia farmer, Paul Copeland, criticized Biden for not fulfilling his promise to protect farmers, stating, “It’s a reminder of what I could have done, a reminder of a promise not fulfilled.”
Polling shows that support for Trump in the Black community is stronger now than it has been in decades.
