The Attorney General of Maine, Aaron Frey, has initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration for halting federal funding due to the state’s noncompliance with President Donald Trump’s transgender athlete ban, which disallows biological males from competing in female sports.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services informed stakeholders that Maine’s Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association, and a high school in the state were violating Title IX by continuing to permit transgender athletes to compete in female sports.
In February, a biological male identifying as a transgender female from Greely High School in Maine won a state championship in pole vaulting in the girls’ category, igniting further national discussions and prompting federal inquiries into Maine’s stance on transgender athletes.
In early February, Trump enacted an executive order (EO) titled “Keeping Men Out Of Women’s Sports,” aimed at safeguarding female athletes from boys and men who take opportunities from women, disregarding potential injuries.
Despite the Democratic Party’s assertion of being pro-women, numerous figures within the party swiftly condemned the executive order, claiming it limited athletic competition for those experiencing gender dysphoria.
“The radical left has waged an all-out campaign to erase the very concept of biological sex and replace it with a militant transgender ideology,” Trump remarked.
This executive order follows a United Nations study, published last year, which reported that transgender athletes have accumulated nearly 900 medals over their female counterparts, highlighting the advantages that male athletes possess over female competitors.
“Male athletes have specific attributes that are advantageous in certain sports, such as higher strength and testosterone levels, even before puberty, leading to unfair competition,” the study stated. “To maintain equity, males should not compete in female sports categories.”
Nonetheless, Maine’s Democratic officials have pledged to resist President Trump’s executive order, criticizing the Trump administration for “withholding funds that are crucial for feeding children in schools, childcare facilities, and after-school programs as well as for assisting disabled adults.”
“The Trump Administration is unlawfully withholding grant funds intended for child welfare under the guise of safety,” asserted Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey. “This highlights a scenario where there seem to be no legal boundaries to restrain the administration as it pursues its lawless agenda.”
“The President and his cabinet do not have the authority to make laws and are not above the law. This action is necessary to remind the President that Maine will not be coerced into legal violations,” he added.
Meanwhile, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins has warned that Maine “must comply with Title IX, which ensures that female student athletes aren’t forced to compete with or be exposed to males,” to qualify for “taxpayer funds from USDA.”
“Furthermore, USDA has initiated a comprehensive review of grants given by the Biden Administration to the Maine Department of Education. Many of these grants seem unnecessary, redundant, or misaligned with the Trump Administration’s priorities. USDA will not tolerate the Biden Administration’s expansive bureaucracy and instead will focus on a farmer-centric and non-ideological Department,” she stated.
The Department of Education has given Maine a deadline of April 11th to comply, while simultaneously referring the state’s noncompliance to the Justice Department.
